The release of the mobile platform lineageos 21, based on the Android 14 code base, has been announced. Lineageos 21 is now on par with branch 20 in terms of functionality and stability, and is deemed ready for its first release. Assemblies for Lineageos 21 can begin in both the Android Emulator emulator and the Android Studio environment. Additionally, Android TV and Android Automotive can also be assembled. Alongside the release of Lineageos 21, work continues on the assemblies of Lineageos 20 and 18.1. Lineageos 18.1, based on Android 11, is being continued due to the platform’s transition to the use of EBPF for filtering packages starting with Android 12. This transition led to the termination of support for many old devices that do not have the required Linux kernel with EBPF (4.9+). Although devices with a kernel of version 4.4 (Qualcomm MSM8998) still have EBPF support, it is challenging to port it to devices with SOC Qualcomm MSM8996, tied to kernel version 3.18. For all supported devices, the installation default now offers its own Lineage Recovery without the need for a separate recovery section. (source: lineageos.org)
Compared to Lineageos 20, Lineageos 21 brings various improvements, including:
- A transition to the Android-14 branch from the AOSP repository as of February 2024. WebView browser engine synchronized with Chromium 120.0.6099.144.
- Inclusion of a new Glimpse application that replaces the Gallery2 application from AOSP. Glimpse features a user-friendly interface for managing photo galleries and incorporates all necessary photo management capabilities. The interface is designed in the style of Material You. (image source)
- Redesigned calculator interface in line with the Material You concept, resulting in a unified design with other applications. (image source)
