California Senator Proposes Bill to Establish Vehicle Speed Limitations
In California, Senator Scott
Weiner has introduced a bill that could change the rules of the road. The proposed legislation aims to
require new cars, starting in 2027, to be equipped with technology that limits their speed to no more than 10
miles per hour (16 km/h) above the posted speed limit.
The bill, numbered 961, suggests incorporating artificial intelligence into vehicles to recognize and control
compliance with speed restrictions. This means that cars would not be able to exceed the set speed limit by more
than 10 miles per hour. While the specific details of this technology remain unknown, it is worth noting that
many modern cars already feature electronic limiters on maximum speed.
The implementation of the bill is expected to rely on GPS technologies and on-board cameras, which would record
instances of speed violations. In case of a violation, the system would be capable of warning the driver through
sound, visual, or tactile signals. In extreme cases, it could even limit the speed of the vehicle to the
permitted limit.
Senator Weiner has defended his bill by emphasizing that it does not propose anything excessive, as speed
restrictions already exist in the country. He also believes that the majority of Californians will support the
initiative because “people know that speed is killing.”
Nevertheless, the bill is still required to go through a complex adoption procedure. It is anticipated to undergo
evaluation in the committee in the spring of this year. However, strong resistance is expected from groups
opposing its adoption.
