IOS 17.3 introduces iPhone theft protection: thieves powerless

Apple has announced the release of updates for its operating systems, including iOS 17.3 and iPados 17.3, as well as Watchos 10.3 and MacOS Sonoma 14.3. One of the key features of iOS 17.3 is the introduction of a new function known as “protection of the stolen device” [1]. This feature is designed to prevent thieves from accessing personal data rather than locating stolen iPhones or iPads.

The “protection of the stolen device” function was initially introduced in beta versions for developers of iOS 17.3 and has proven to be quite useful. In the event of theft of an iPhone or iPad running iOS 17.3, the system can be locked by activating the ID or Touch ID identification requirement. This feature even works if the thief has the device’s password, preventing them from entering their biometric data and blocking the owner’s access to the device.

An additional security measure is the activation of a one-hour system delay before changing the password, if the phone or tablet is in an unfamiliar location. Although the “protection of the stolen device” function does not stop the thief, it significantly complicates their task. This function is available on various iPhone and iPad models including XS, XS Max, XR, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, as well as the iPhone SE 2nd and 3rd generation. It is also supported on iPad models such as the 5th generation iPad mini, 6th generation standard iPad, 3rd generation iPad Air, and all iPad Pro models [2].

To check for the availability of the update, users can go to the settings of their device. To enable the “protection of the stolen device” function, it is necessary to have two-factor authentication for Apple ID, and enable device code, Face ID or Touch ID, locator, and geolocation parameters [2].

The “protection of the stolen device” function can be turned on through the “Settings” application. Users can follow the steps below to enable or disable the function:

  1. Open the “Settings” application and select “Face ID and Code-Parol”.
  2. Enter the Parol code of your device.
  3. Click to enable or disable the “Protection of the stolen devices” function.

It is important to note that if users try to turn off the “protection of the stolen device” function while in an unfamiliar location, there will be a systemic
