Tiobe Software published the January rating of the popularity of programming languages, in which the JavaScript language stood out. Compared to January 2023, JavaScript moved from the seventh to the sixth place in the ranking. PHP also saw an increase in popularity, moving from the 10th to the 7th place. Scratch made a significant jump from the 20th to the 10th place, showing a popularity growth of 0.83%. Other languages that showed improvements in their positions include GO – C (12 to 11), Fortran (27 to 12 with a popularity growth of 0.64%), Object Pascal (17 to 13), Mathlab (15 to 14), Kotkin (25 to 17), and Cobol (31 to 20).
The language of the year is named C#, which retained its 5th place but became the leader in terms of popularity growth with a percentage increase of 1.43%.
However, there were also languages that saw a decline in their rankings. Visual Basic dropped from the 6th to the 8th place, SQL from the 8th to the 9th, assembler from the 9th to the 15th, SWIFT from the 11th to the 16th, Ruby from the 16th to the 18th, and rust from the 18th to the 19th (though Rust’s popularity increased by 0.18%).
The Python language continues to hold the top position in the ranking, although its popularity decreased by 2.39% over the past year. Other languages that experienced a decline in popularity include the SI language (4.81% decrease), C++ (2.95% decrease), and Java (4.34% decrease).
The Tiobe Popularity Index determines its rankings by analyzing search queries across various platforms including Google, Google Blogs, Yahoo!, Wikipedia, Msn, Youtube, QQ, Sohu, Bing, Amazon, and Baidu.
In the January ranking by pypl, which utilizes Google Trends, the top three positions remain unchanged. Python continues to hold the first place, followed by Java and JavaScript.
