Sony Revolutionizes 3D Modeling with New Virtual Reality System

Sony Introduces New System for Creating “Spatial Content”
Sony has unveiled a new system at CES 2024 that allows users to edit and create 3D models in virtual reality. Alongside the system, Sony also showcased a unique pair of controllers.
The new system is operated through a headset built on the Snapdragon XR2 Plus Gen 2 platform. Unlike PlayStation VR, this headset caters more towards professionals working with 3D models. Sony’s CEO, Kanichiro Yoshida, highlights that the headset enables users to expand their “creation space by applying virtual objects to physical space.”
During the demonstration, users manipulated virtual objects using two controllers: a ring and a pointer that perfectly fit in the hand. Additionally, the front part of the headset can be lifted, allowing users to seamlessly switch between the virtual and physical space. Sony claims that their “own rendering technology” ensures high-quality and realistic rendering of 3D objects and characters in real time.
Yoshida emphasizes that “creators can work in real space, immersing themselves in the development process” with unrestricted access to virtual objects. Sony previously developed the “Spatial Reality Display,” which enables users to view digital objects in 3D by tracking facial and eye movements. Although the new system is different, it appears to be targeted at the same professional content creators.
Sony plans to release the new system later this year, although the price has not been announced yet. It is possible that the device will face competition from the Apple Vision Pro, which is set to be launched next month.
