Rafael Sadowski has announced the accessibility of the user environment KDE Plasma 5.27 for installation in OpenBSD-Current. This includes the formation of KDE-PLASMA and KDE-PLASMA-EXTRA, with the intention to support KDE Plasma in the upcoming spring issue of OpenBSD 7.5. After terminating support for KDE4 in OpenBSD, the option to use the new KDE Plasma 5 desktop branch was put on hold. While packets with KDE GEARS 5 applications and KDE Frameworks 5 libraries have been available in OpenBSD ports, the shell itself has remained inactive until now.
Installing KDE Plasma and KDE Gear is now as simple as executing the following commands: pkg_add KDE, pkg_add KDE-PLASMA, and pkg_add KDE-PLASMA-EXTRA.
It is worth noting that the transition of the KDE 6 branch to QT 6 will not pose a major problem for OpenBSD, as the QT 6 branch and its related dependencies are already adapted to work in OpenBSD. The remaining tasks involve resolving some issues with the composite server Kwin, Wayland, NetworkManager, and SDDM. Additionally, there are plans to add support for the PKG_ADD utility in the Discover application installation interface.
