GitHub Blocks Game Engine OpenXray at GSC’s Request

Company GSC Game World, which developed a series of games S.T.A.L.K.E.R., has come into conflict with the open source project OpenXray. OpenXray is a project that aims to reproduce the game engine for the first parts of S.T.A.L.K.E.R., correcting original flaws and introducing new features such as support for 64-bit platforms, Linux, and OpenGL. The project was born out of the leakage of the original codes of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. engine. While the licensed side of OpenXray development has always been in question, it was allowed to continue with the knowledge of GSC.

However, the situation has changed recently, as GSC has requested the blocking of the OpenXray project on GitHub. The request was made under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), claiming that OpenXray violates GSC’s exclusive rights to the game S.T.A.L.K.E.R. The request was sent on behalf of the Anti-Piracy Protection division, acting in the interests of GSC.

The request specifically mentions that the OpenXray repositories contain materials obtained through reverse engineering of the game S.T.A.L.K.E.R., which violates the conditions of use. The engine also includes mechanisms for protecting access to game resources, such as compression, encryption, and storage in special containers. The use of unpublished texts and the unauthorized use of graphic and sound data are also mentioned in the request.

It remains to be seen how this conflict between GSC Game World and the OpenXray project will unfold.
