Obituary: Niklaus Virt, Renowned Programming Theoretician

January 1, the programming community mourns the loss of Niklaus Virt, one of the leading programming theoreticians. Unfortunately, Virt did not live to celebrate his 90th birthday. He was widely known as the author of ten programming languages, including Pascal, Modula-2, and Oberon.

Furthermore, Virt was one of the creators of the structural programming paradigm. His groundbreaking work introduced the idea of performing an intermediate Bytcoda and garbage assembly in interpreters. This greatly contributed to the development of computer sciences.

Virt’s exceptional contributions to the field earned him various recognitions, including the prestigious Turing premium and the “Pioneer of computer technology” medal.
