The Monegasques, hung on the outburst to the Louis-II stadium (1-1), dominated the meeting but lacked realism and they were punished (3-2) by effective Dutch and galvanized by their boiling Public.
The years follow one another and look alike for Monaco: as last year, the ASM was eliminated from the Champions League in extension during summer qualifications after its 3-2 defeat on the lawn of the PSV Eindhoven Tuesday 9 august. The Azureans had however reversed the situation after the opening of the scoring of Joey Veerman (21st) thanks to Guillermo Maripan (58th) and Wissam Ben Yedder (70th), but Erick Gutierrez torn off the extension (89th). And during this one, Captain Luuk de Jong (109th) offered the Dutch club his ticket for the dams where he will face the Glasgow Rangers, Tombers de l’Union Saint-Gilloise (3-0).
The blow is tough for the players of Philippe Clement, who had already let L1 second place escape, directly qualifying for the group stage of the C1, in additional time in the last match of the season in Lens End May (2-2).
Like last season, Monaco, eliminated after extension by the Shakthar Donetsk in dams, will have to settle for the Europa League. France will therefore only have two representatives in the Champions League, Paris SG, reigning champion, and Marseille, its runner -up.
Monaco started the meeting well by pressing the Dutch people and obtained the first two situations by Aleksandr Golovin (5th, 8th), but the opposing response was quick with Cody Gakpo (11th). While the ASM had control, it was the PSV that opened the scoring: on the right side, Philipp Mwene delivered a withdrawal center which was taken over by Joey Veerman, already goalscorer (1-0, 23rd). The players of the rock then continued their domination, but struggled to be dangerous, like Kevin Volland (34th), or lacked efficiency, such as Wissam Ben Yedder who lost his duel with Walter Benitez (45th ).
Monaco was qualified in the 88th minute
But the Monegasques were also scared against, as on this strike from Ismael Saibari (28th) or this shot of Veerman diverted by Axel Disasi and who almost deceived Alexander Nübel (42nd). On the return from the locker room, the changes made by Clement with the entries of Breel Embolo (46th), Krépin Diatta (53rd) and Caio Henrique (53rd) will quickly bear fruit.
After sending a head on the post (54th), Maripan equalized following a Coio Henrique corner (1-1, 58th). Then a few seconds after having replaced Takumi Minamino, Gelson Martins delivered a decisive pass to Ben Yedder, who gave the advantage to the ASM of an unstoppable volley (1-2, 69th).
Monaco seemed to go to qualification, but the end of the match was nightmare: just after a disputed tackle of Armando Obispo on Embolo To the goal (88th), Gutierrez, on the edge of the offside, equalized with the head (2-2, 89th).
Then, during the overtime, the Monegasques still lacked success with an embolo head that crashed on the bar (92nd) and a volley of Diatta counted in extremis by Gutierrez (104th). And on one of the rare Dutch situations, De Jong exploded the Philips Stadion by scoring the goal of qualifying the head (3-2, 109th).
