Even with a truce, Gaza will remain a prison

The Gaza fate was once again suspended from that of a truce on Monday, August 8. In question, the strikes started by Israel against officials of Islamic jihad, a Palestinian armed group that the Hebrew State and the majority of its Western allies consider the terrorist. They were followed in retaliation of rockets on Israeli territory, claimed by this same organization.

This new access to violence, always more expensive in Palestinian lives (more than forty in three days, including children, according to the Palestinians), aroused, like the previous ones and as those who will inevitably follow the same laconic press releases. There is no doubt that the chancelleries will hasten to forget Gaza once the weapons have been killed.

They will be wrong, as they are wrong to disinterested in weariness and overwhelming the destiny of this enclave subjected for more than fifteen years to a ruthless blockade. Despite the wars of 2008, 2012, 2014 and 2021, these fifteen years of trivialization of an unacceptable situation made Gaza, in addition to the abyme of the asymmetry of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, a lost territory of international conscience.

a deadly blockade

When Palestinian rocket fire ceases, intercepted for the overwhelming majority of them by the very efficient anti -aircraft defense of the Hebrew state, the Israelis are returning to an ordinary life. It is quite different for the inhabitants of Gaza, who remain subject to the same collective punishment regime, prisoners of the same open -air jail. The narrow strip of earth only surgery thanks to external aid closely controlled by Israel.

The consequences of this deadly blockade, which succeeded years of exceptional regime, are recalled year after year by international organizations as the World Bank. It is an unemployment rate and a devastating level of poverty that condemn the Palestinians to a life without a future, of increasingly critical conditions of existence, in particular with regard to access to the Water.

International resignation is not limited, alas, in Gaza. The Israeli Expulsion Policy in progress in the eastern districts of Jerusalem, the violence perpetrated by the Israeli settlers of the West Bank as the forced transfer decision of a thousand Palestinians in the south of Hebron hardly arouse more than coughs more In addition discreet. And the new Arab allies of Israel, the United Arab Emirates in Morocco have clearly excluded to obtain, in return for historical normalizations, the slightest advance for the Palestinians.

Divided as politically as geographically, the latter have provided all possible pretexts for this international disinterestedness. The ossification of the direction of the Palestinian National Movement, embodied by the worn presidency to Mahmoud Abbas’ rope testifies to this. However, this does not explain why countries that can claim an influence on the Israeli authorities, starting with the United States or the main European countries, are also absent and resigned to a false status quo.

The latter mask more and more difficult to have the inevitable death of the two -state solution, which remains their official diplomatic horizon. Gaza’s bombings should serve as a reminder of order, because one day it will be necessary to pay the moral price of inaction.
