Diluvian rains fell in the last twenty-four hours in eastern Afghanistan. Sudden floods, caused by these rains, left at least twenty-nine dead and destroyed dozens of houses in the provinces of Parwan, Kapisa and Nangarhar, said on Monday August 15.

At least twenty people were killed and more than fifty were injured in bywan, according to Mohammad Naseeb Haqqani, spokesperson for the Department of Disaster Management. Five people died in the province of Kapisa and four in that of Nangarhar, he added.

A hundred people are still missing in bywan, Hekmatullah Shamim, spokesperson for the governor of the province, announced. “Cultures, dozens of houses and roads have been destroyed,” said Mohammad Naseeb Haqqani to the France-Presse agency (AFP). Rescue teams and emergency aid were sent to the affected areas. Dozens of Afghans die each year due to torrential rains, especially in poor rural areas where summarily built houses can easily collapse.
