Video The Kenyan presidential election of August 9 ended on Monday 15, in confusion. The result, announced by an independent body, was disowned by part of its commissioners. The loser candidate, Raila Odonga, announced that he would contest the courts.
“The figures announced (…) are zero and non -adventure”: it is with these words that Raila Odonga, the candidate given losing to the Kenyan presidential election, disputed the ballot, Tuesday, August 16. The IEBC, the independence body which organized the vote, also divided on the very tight results, which gave the winner William Ruto to 50.5 %.
“The process (…) used to declare the results of the presidential election was opaque,” said Juliana Chere, vice-president of the IEBC, during a press conference during which, with three of her colleagues, she was dissociated from the announcement.
The defeat of Raila Odonga is considered surprising by a part of the observers because, throughout his electoral campaign, he benefited from the support of the outgoing president, Uhuru Kenyatta.
