The fights in the “green zone” killed around twenty people. Chaos has won other Iraqi regions.
Several rockets were fired from the “green zone” of Baghdad on Tuesday, August 30, while the fights between the supporters of the Shiite leader Moqtada al-Sadr and the army supported by men of the Hachd al-Chaabi (” Popular mobilization units “), ex-Iran-Iran-Iran-Iran-Iran-integrated forces, have taken over. This escalation left at least twenty-three dead in the last twenty-four hours, according to a new assessment provided by a medical source, and 380 people injured.
Violence broke out on Monday in Baghdad after the decision of Imam Shiite Moqtada Al Sadr to leave Iraqi political life, blocked since the legislative elections last October. Young sadists took the headquarters of the government located in the “green zone”, a secure district housing government buildings and embassies, and came down to the streets where they faced members of pro-Iranian factions.

The capital was shaken during the night by fed fire and the explosion of rockets, and, Tuesday, the automatic arms and rocket launcher resounded in any Baghdad from the “green zone”. The curfew in force since Monday evening throughout Iraq was maintained on Tuesday. Schools, administrations and shops are closed. Some rare cars venture into the streets of Baghdad, the Iraqi capital where the army and the police ensure that the curfew is respected.
Chaos has won other Iraqi regions: in the province of DHI Qar, sadists have invaded the seat of the governorate and penetrated into other official buildings in Nassiriya. The headquarters of the province of Babylon, in the city of Hilla, was also occupied by supporters of Moqtada al-Sadr.
The political crisis in Iraq has lasted since the legislative elections in October 2021. Shiite political forces, especially that of Moqtada al-Sadr, cannot agree on a new Prime Minister and a new government.
In Washington, the White House judged the situation “disturbing” and called for calm and dialogue. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres asked all parties to “take immediate measures to defuse the situation”. The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs also called, late Monday evening, the parties “to the greatest restraint”. France “calls them on responsibility and immediately ceasing the deadly clashes,” the ministry said in a statement.
