one hundred and twenty-two women lost their lives in 2021 under the blows of their spouse or ex-spouse, against one hundred two in 2020.
One hundred and twenty-two women lost their lives in 2021 under the blows of their spouse or ex-spouse, according to the results of the “violent deaths within the couple” published Friday August 16 by the Ministry of the Interior.
These feminicides are up 20 % compared to the previous year. In 2020, 102 women lost their lives. The “violent deaths within the couple” concerned 143 people in 2021, 14 % more than the previous year. “The year 2021 thus marks a decline in relation to the clear drop in marital homicides observed in 2020”, underlines the ministry.
The 143 marital homicides identified in 2021 “correspond more to the level of the number of violent deaths within the couple observed before the epidemic of COVID-19”, specifies the study of the Ministry of the Interior. One hundred and forty-six women had indeed been identified in 2019. 2> 64 % of the victims had already pointed out the violence
The victims of marital homicides are 85 % of women, and the authors are 86 % of men. “The typical profile of the author has not changed. It is mainly male, most often, as a couple, of French nationality, aged 30 to 49 or 70 and over, and no more or more professional activity “, underlines the study.
Almost one in three women (32 %) had already undergone previous violence and 64 % of these had reported this violence to the police. Among these, 84 % had filed a complaint. “Only three of the victims benefited from the protection systems known to the police,” notes the study.
In a third of cases (33 %), the presence of at least one substance likely to alter the discernment of the author and/or the victim (alcohol, narcotics, psychotropic drugs) is noted at the time of facts. On average, a death was recorded every two and a half days last year, against one every three days in 2020.
