Emmanuel Macron announces creation of a commission of French and Algerian historians on colonization

The French president, Emmanuel Macron, announced, Thursday, August 25 in Algiers, the establishment of a mixed commission of Algerian and French historians to study the archives on colonization and the war of Algeria.

“We have a common past” which “is complex, painful” and “we decided together” to create “a mixed commission of historians” to “look at this whole historical period”, “from the beginning of Colonization to the War of Liberation, without taboo, with a desire (…) of full access to our archives, “said the French head of state during a joint declaration with his counterpart, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, at First day of his visit to Algeria.

” Promising perspectives “

During a statement to the media, the Algerian president welcomed “encouraging results” which allow “to trace promising prospects”, on the first day of the visit in Algeria of Emmanuel Macron.

Abdelmadjid Tebboune underlined the determination of Paris and Algiers to “go forward” and to “intensify the efforts, in order to enhance relations between the two countries”. He mentioned the revival of several intergovernmental committees, including the high-level committee (CHN), the Franco-Algerian Economic Mixed Committee, the Algerian-French Strategic Dialogue Committee and “an intensification of high-level visits”. It is also planned to “intensify cooperation at all levels and trade”.

The meeting between the two leaders has, moreover, “was an opportunity to discuss the security and policy of common interest in the regional and international level”, added the Algerian president.

“We have exchanged our points of view, particularly on the situation in Libya, Mali, the Sahel and Western Sahara who require combined efforts to consolidate stability in the region,” said Tébboune.
