Triple disappointment for French tennis. The three tricolor representatives of the day were eliminated on Saturday September 3, in the third round of the US Open, in New York. Alizé Cornet is the one who can feed the most regrets after her very committed match against the American Danielle Collins. Clara Burel and Richard Gasquet were literally swept away respectively by Aryna Sabalenka and Rafael Nadal.

Cornet comes out with a record

The New York adventure stops with a touch of bitterness for Alizé Cornet. The 40 world was eliminated in two tight sleeves (6-4, 7-6 [11/9]) by the American Danielle Collins (19 e ) which had already put an end to the start of the season at the most beautiful French route in the Grand Slam, in the quarter-finals at the Australian Open.

“Alizé played very well, she pushed me to the limit, I needed a big mind to beat her. When we look at Alizé, she still fights, her anticipation game is one of the best on the circuit “commented Danielle Collins. At 28, the American had never exceeded the third round of the New York Major, but she reached the final in Melbourne at the start of the year.

The match against Cornet was very balanced, between two surly players who put all their strength in almost each of their strikes. The American managed the break in the first round to detach himself 3-2 and was no longer caught up.

In the second round, each player has retained her put into play to the tie-break. Alizé Cornet obtained three balls to equalize a set everywhere, but it was finally Danielle Collins who concluded on her second match ball.

Alizé Cornet leaves New York after a new record of 63 stakes in a row in Grand Chelems tournaments, improving the one she co-detected from Wimbledon with the Japanese Ai Sugiyama.

Burel and Helpless gasquet

The superb course by Clara Burel suddenly ended on Saturday evening against the Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka (6 e ) which swept the French, 131st in the world and from qualifying, in two fast rounds ( 6-0, 6-2).

La Française participated at 21 years in her second New York adult (elimination in the first round in 2021) and equaled her best high school result, already reached Roland-Garros in 2020. This season, she was eliminated in the first round of the first three tournaments of the Grand Chelem (Australian Open, Roland-Garros, Wimbledon).

For his part, Richard Gasquet came close to the correctional against the hurricane Rafael Nadal. After two first joy turns, the Spaniard accelerated the cadence against the French and won 6-0, 6-1, 7-5, inflicting on his favorite victim his 18 e defeat in So many confrontations.

If Gasquet was able to mark six games in this meeting, it was at the cost of a bar of honor in the third set, during which he finally dropped his blows. Nadal, who has finally seen a little adversity manifest, made sure not to let Gasquet feed hope for ascent.

“This is my best game in the tournament, there have been a lot of improvements, I raised my level of play, it’s important,” said the Mallorcan, who wants to bring his record for his record Titles of the Grand Chelem and will have as an opponent in the next round the American Frances Tiafoe (26 e ).

There are only two French representatives left for the second New York week. Among women, Caroline Garcia (17 global), in very large shape, will face, in the round of 16, the American Alison Riske (29 e ). In men, Corentin Moutet, 112 global and drafted qualifications, will not have the easy task. For his first eighth final of a major, he will challenge the Norwegian Casper Ruud (5 e ), finalist of the last Roland-Garros.
