War in Ukraine: behind success of counter-offensive of kyiv troops, ubiquitous American support

Delivery of more than $ 14.5 billion in military equipment, training of NATO tactics, advice for operating planning: Washington’s help has been decisive.

“We could not have resumed these territories without the help of the United States.” The Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky recognized him himself, during a visit to the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken to kyiv on September 9: Washington’s support was essential in the success of the counter-offensive launched by Ukrainian troops in the south and northeast of the country. In a few days, the army of kyiv resumed 6,000 km² of its territory around Kherson and Kharkiv, according to the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, and its progress continued Wednesday morning September 14.

Unsurprisingly, American support is first of all material. Since February 24, the United States has delivered for more than $ 14.5 billion (14.5 billion euros) of military equipment to Ukraine, of which 12.5 billion dollars were directly levied in US military stocks says the Pentagon. By way of comparison, the Ukrainian defense budget was around 5 billion dollars a year before the Russian invasion. The United States alone provides 70 % of Western military aid. The second contributor is Poland and the third the United Kingdom, according to the German Institute Kiel. France is in the eleventh row.

Except for heavy tanks and combat aircraft, which Washington and his allies are always reluctant to give in for fear of climbing with Moscow, the United States has delivered a real army in Kit to Ukraine. Portable anti-tank missiles (more than 40,000 including 8,500 javelin), cannons (126 m777 of 155 mm), suicide drones (700 Switchblade and 700 Phoenix Ghost), helicopters (twenty Mi -7), anti-aircraft missiles (1,400 Stinger), ground-to-air missile batteries (eight nasams), armored vehicles (200 m113 and several hundred humvee)…

Beyond the quantity, it is above all the quality of the materials delivered which allowed the kyiv troops to stop the Russian offensive and then take up the initiative. In the very opinion of the Ukrainian staff, the delivery by Washington of sixteen multiple rocket launches M142 from June (the United Kingdom, Norway and Germany also provided nine copies of M270, a equivalent model) marked a turning point, allowing to strike the Russian device (deposits, logistics axes, etc.) up to 80 kilometers away. 2>

Equipment, training and information

The massive supply of ammunition (800,000 155 mm, 144,000 105 mm, 85,000 120 mm, etc.) was also decisive to respond to the firepower of Russian artillery and support a front of 2,500 kilometers of which 1,300 km are considered active. The Starlink operator, owned by Elon Musk, indicates for its part having delivered 15,000 to 20,000 satellite terminals in Ukraine, very useful for the military when the communication networks are cut. “Our goal today is to continue to provide Ukrainians with everything they need,” said the US Defense Ministry in a statement published on September 12.
