Eric Dupond-Moretti chose to take everyone by surprise by announcing, Monday September 12 in the morning on BFM-TV, an increase in salaries of magistrates. While the Minister of Justice hires a week of consultations on the follow -up to the States General of Justice, he promises an increase in the remuneration of magistrates of “the order of 1,000 euros gross on average” per month. “It’s quite incredible. It’s been a year and a half that we ask to open negotiations on remuneration, we no longer believed in it,” reacts Céline Parisot, president of the union union of magistrates (USM), The first union of the profession.
The Minister of Justice justified this spectacular gesture by the fact that no revaluation of judicial magistrates had intervened since 1996. Unlike administrative magistrates (administrative courts, administrative courses of appeal and council of state) which have recently received an increase in their treatment, digging the gap between the two orders of jurisdiction. “I want the magistrates of the judicial order to be paid as the magistrates of the administrative order,” said Mr. Dupond-Moretti on the news channel.
The terms of this increase in remuneration is not specified at the moment, but the percentage appears considerable while the magistrates at the start of their career receive 2,650 euros net per month. At the end of their careers, excluding hierarchical or specialized functions, net remuneration reaches 6,700 euros. According to what the Minister announced to the first presidents of the Court of Appeal and attorney general whom he received on Monday morning, the revaluation will be primarily flexed at the start of a career in order to strengthen the attractiveness of the profession.

“We have a deficit in attractiveness towards lawyers or lawyers who hesitate before reorienting themselves towards the judicial magistracy because of the financial sacrifice that this represents”, specifies M me Parisot. Concretely, the magistrates should see the translation on their pay sheet of this announcement from October 2023, informs the ministry.
