The coffin of Elizabeth II, who died Thursday in his Scottish Balmoral residence, will be transported Sunday September 11 through Scotland to join Edinburgh, where the public will be able to pay a first tribute to the monarch, before his solemn return Tuesday in London for national funerals on September 19.

The royal hearse must leave Balmoral, the residence where the monarch liked to spend the summer, at 10 am local time (11 am, Paris time), to arrive in Edinburgh, the Scottish capital, around 16 hours, local time (5 p.m. Paris time) after a trip of almost 300 kilometers.

A large crowd is expected on the course of the funeral convoy, to greet one last time that which reigned seventy years and seven months, familiar and reassuring presence, but always mysterious, having crossed, imperturbable, the eras and the Crises. The crowd was asked not to throw flowers when passing the convoy. The hearse will first step in Ballater, the village very close to the castle, then in Aberdeen and Dunde before joining Edinburgh. The coffin will spend the night there in the Holyroodhouse throne room, official royal residence in Scotland.

national funeral in Westminster

On Saturday, the Buckingham Palace confirmed that the national funeral would take place on September 19 at the Westminster Abbey, in London, a high place of marriages, wreaths and royal burials for almost a millennium. It was there that the one who was still only Princess Elizabeth had married in November 1947, at 21, Philip Mountbatten. It was there that she was crowned there on June 2, 1953. Managers around the world were expected for the ceremony, including the American president, Joe Biden.
