Quirky resumption, premises too small, campus not finished… In Sorbonne-Nouvelle, cursed school year

The university, which moves to a new campus in eastern Paris, accumulates logistical and immovable problems, in a degraded social climate. Back to school has been shifted by two weeks.

The Sorbonne-Nouvelle University cracks everywhere. Monday September 12, during a pre -entry meeting in amphitheater, a wooden cornice installed 2 meters high, heavy several kilos, collapsed on a license student – luckily, she was not injured . This week, photos of the “beam” fell from the wall circulated in messaging and social networks, arousing a certain stir within staff and students. “Since then, all the elements have been reinforced. But it is absolutely unacceptable,” comments the president of the university, Jamil Jean-Marc Dakhlia.

The campus is, however, brand new. Sorbonne-Nouvelle (ex-Paris-III, called “censier”) has just left his dilapidated and asbestos buildings in the Latin district to move in a beautiful colorful set of 26,000 square meters signed by the architect Star Christian de Portzamparc this summer this summer , next to the Place de la Nation. But, since then, this establishment of 17,000 students, specializing in languages, culture and literature, has accumulated difficulties. To the point that, in early September, the postponement of two weeks of the start of the school year was voted (it will take place on October 3, most of the students), because the jobs of time could not be finalized in time. The students were warned at the last moment. Only one of these two weeks will be caught, later in the year, the other will be lost.

Much managed site

This unusual situation stems from heavy internal organizational difficulties, associated with a poorly managed site where the adventures have accumulated. As beautiful as they are, these new premises are far too small – the university has around thirty rooms less compared to the past year. This problem, however reported for several years by staff representatives, was minimized by the ministry and by university leaders, who called for better optimization of the use of rooms … They found themselves at the foot of the wall , in the month of June. In addition, two large amphitheatres are not usable, due to design defects, and cannot be occupied this year. Just like the large performance hall. Also, if the university restaurant works, the cafeteria will not be open for the start of the school year.

Just before summer, the online tilting of a whole series of courses (mainly the lecturers of license students) was announced for the start of the school year, for lack of free rooms. In early September, a whole other section of lessons (languages, in particular) was tilted online for the first semester. For many students, the volume of courses behind a computer could reach 40 %, this semester.
