This career soldier, at the head of the country from 1992 to 1998, died on Sunday July 31.
The former Philippine President Fidel Ramos, who led the country during a rare period of growth and peace, died Sunday July 31 at 94, announced senior officials in the country. This frail career soldier, colloquially nicknamed “Eddie” by the Philippins, was president from 1992 to 1998.
“It is with great sadness that we learn the death of former president Fidel V. Ramos,” said Trixie Cruz Angeles, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr, son and homonym of the deceased dictator, who took office last month.
“He leaves behind a colorful inheritance (…) in history for his participation in the big changes of our country, both as a military officer and as the chief of the executive”, she Added.
“Pillar of democracy”
Fidel Ramos’s family should publish a statement later on Sunday. The cause of death has not yet been communicated.
The European Union delegation in the Philippines expressed condolences, describing the deceased as a “devoted statesman” and a “pillar of democracy”. Fidel Ramos was the first Protestant to access the supreme function in this predominantly Catholic country, despite the opposition of certain members of the Church.
