War in Ukraine invites itself to talks on Syria between Russia Turkey and Iran

The Russian president, Vladimir Putin, met his Iranian and Turkish counterparts at Tehran on Tuesday at Tehran at a summit on Syria which was in fact dominated by the conflict in Ukraine. Anxious to bypass Western sanctions, Iran and Russia try to strengthen their energy and military cooperation.

Iran unrolled the red carpet for the arrival of the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, warmly welcomed at Mehrabad de Tehran airport on Tuesday, July 19, by the Iranian oil minister Javad Owji. The visit of Mr. Putin, the second abroad since the invasion of Ukraine, is a response to the recent tour of the American president, Joe Biden, in Israel and Saudi Arabia, during which he was question of thwarting Iran.

Mr. Putin may have mentioned “progress” on the file of Ukrainian cereals, praising Turkish mediation, his position has not varied from an iota. He continues to demand the lifting of part of the sanctions, financial above all, imposed by the West against his country.

Its requirements may have been heard, the European Commission has thus proposed to member states to unlock “certain funds” of frozen Russian banks following sanctions to help the Russian exports of agricultural products, including wheat and fertilizers. In full confrontation with the Transatlantic camp, the master of the Kremlin seeks the support of Tehran, if only to prove that his country is not as isolated as Westerners claim it.

“The relationship with Khamenei is very important”, recalled Iouri Ouchakov, the diplomatic advisor of the Russian president before his meeting with Ali Khamenei, the Iranian Supreme Guide. The positions of the two countries on most important questions are “close or identical,” he said. Both are the main supports of the Syrian regime. Moscow, who, all to his offensive in Donbass, had to reduce his presence on the Syrian field, is counting on the Iranian Shiite militias to continue to support militarily Bashar al-Assad.
