It was just twenty years ago, the New York dark rockers of Interpol released their first album, Turn On The Bright Lights. A year earlier, The Strokes did the same with the now classic is this it. Two sonic tremors which then place the city, barely a presentation of the September 11 attacks, at the center of a rock revival worldwide. Young groups in “The” emerge everywhere (The White Stripes, The Vines, The Von Bondies …), the guitars become fashionable, and the synthesizers and boxes with rhythms are honest – at least for a few years.

Figures of this scene, The Strokes and Interpol differ significantly: the first permeates the literate rock of their elders – The Velvet Underground and Television -, with the embodied coolness of their converse sneakers; Darker, like the united and elegant black costumes of its members, Interpol forges his identity far from Manhattan, through the Cathartic post-punk of the Mancuniens Joy Division and The Chameleons.

Twenty years later, therefore, the revival rock has passed, but Interpol is still there, giving concerts around the world, and continuing to record consistent albums, including the latest, The Other Side of Make -Believe. In early June, the singer, guitarist and lyricist Paul Banks greets us in French by screen of the Zoom interposed application. Dressed in a blue hooded sweatshirt, which contrasts with his black stage outfit, the musician apologizes for just out of a shower, with the gaze of the one who tries to fight against his shyness. He returns from a jogging in the streets of Barcelona, where Interpol started his European tour at the Primavera Sound festival.

“Explore different styles”

The gestation of this seventh opus of the trio led by Banks and his faithful partners, guitarist Daniel Kessler and drummer Samuel Fogarino, obviously did not escape the consequences of the health crisis. In early 2020, New Yorkers barely finished the tour accompanying their previous album Marauder (2018), when the pandemic broke out. “All well considered, we were extremely lucky, comments the singer. For example, the Strokes were unable to tour to promote their latest album”, The New Abnomal. Free from any obligation, the group then takes advantage of it to tackle new songs.
