These fires triggered at the start of the heat wave episode that has touched France since Monday, July 11. The Gironde is maintained in orange “heat wave” vigilance by Météo-France.
The two forest fires that have been raging since Tuesday in Gironde have burned some 3,700 hectares, the prefecture announced Thursday July 14. About forty kilometers south of Bordeaux, in the commune of Landiras where the situation is “stabilized even if the fire is not yet controlled”, 2,100 hectares of pines have gone up in smoke.
1,600 other hectares burned in the forest of the Teste-de-Buch, in the Arcachon basin, very close to the famous Dune du Pilat, exceptionally closed to the public. At La Teste, the situation is “always uncertain because of the difficulties of access” and 60 people were evacuated from a subdivision of Cazaux, a village of this very extensive town, said the prefecture.

During the night of Tuesday to Wednesday, some 6,000 people had been evacuated from the Teste sector campsites, where the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, visited Tuesday afternoon.
According to firefighters, the fact that this user forest is planted on a dune cordon and is not maintained makes operations difficult, in addition to the changing wind and heat.
These fires, which did not make a victim, triggered at the start of the heat wave episode that has touched France since Monday, mainly in the west and south of the country. The Gironde is maintained in orange “heat wave” vigilance by Météo-France.
