The weather cards will, once again, turn red or even crimson. France is preparing for a new heat wave from Tuesday July 12, which is expected to last 8 to 10 days at least. “The evolution is very likely towards a heat wave, with a peak undoubtedly between Saturday 16 and Tuesday 19 July”, indicates Météo-France, who placed 23 Departments in Heat yellow alert , Monday, in the south and southwest. The country has already undergone a heat wave in mid -June -the earliest ever recorded -, as well as an episode of strong heat in mid -May.

The week will be marked by a progressive rise in temperatures. On Monday, the 30 ° C was exceeded in a very large part of the country, with points at 37 ° C in certain areas of the Southwest. The increase in the thermometer will continue Tuesday, with 36 ° C at 38 ° C, or even locally 39 ° C, from Charentes to the southwest and at the Rhône valley. These very strong heat should extend to the center, the north and the east on Wednesday. After “light and temporary” cooling Thursday and Friday in the north of the country, mercury should start upwards and touch the whole territory, “with scorching temperatures from Sunday”, details Matthieu Chevallier, head of the permanence for forecasting in Météo-France. The uncertainties are still strong at the end of the phenomenon and its intensity.

a heat dome

The cause of this new heat wave, which is already strongly affecting Spain and Portugal, is different from that of mid-June. This time it is a heat dome, caused by a vast anticyclone located on Western Europe, which traps hot air by preventing the circulation of air masses. “You have to imagine a lid that compresses the air. The temperature then increases day after day,” explains Matthieu Sorel, climatologist at Météo-France.

From Saturday, another mechanism should take over: a “cold drop”, that is to say a high altitude depression, which is currently evolving near the Azores archipelago. “It will accentuate the heat dome, resulting in a righteousness of the burning air from North Africa and Spain, a plume of heat that will add up to the rest,” explains Sébastien Léas, forecuing in Météo- France.

The displacement of this “cold drop” in the coming days, still very uncertain, will be crucial to determine the intensity of the heat wave. The forecastist judges that it is “too early” to compare with the heat wave of August 2003, which had lasted fifteen days and had caused the death of 15,000 people.
