The period of floating will not be shed in at Olympique de Marseille (OM). While the departure of Jorge Sampaoli caused the stupor on Friday 1 July July with all the Marseille supporters, after a season completed in 2ᵉ place in the championship, the club reacted by formalizing on Monday, The arrival of Igor Tudor on the bench. The Croatian technician, free since his departure from Hellas Verona (Italy) at the end of May, signed up with OM for two seasons.

If the operation was carried out with so much speed -when Paris -Saint -Germain is slow to formalize the identity of his new coach -is that the Marseille president, Pablo Longoria, had Feel the wind turn with Sampaoli. The latter, unhappy with the management taken by the recruitment of OM at the start of the transfer market, therefore chose to leave the club.

By hiring Tudor, Marseille believes in “continuity and the ambition of the project”, as the club writes in its formalization press release. The 44 -year -old Croatian coach indeed resembles the Sampaoli eruptive in many aspects: an intensity at all times in training, an attacking game and an aggressiveness required for the loss of the ball.

Tudor is “recognized for its playing philosophy brought forward,” added OM in its press release. An assertion that has been verified in recent months in Serie A, for its first and only season on the bench of Hellas Verona. Appointed coach in September when the Italian championship had already started, Tudor transformed the face of the Hellas, by making it an offensive team which ended in 9ᵉ place, with the 5 e best attack in the championship .

accustomed to boiling contexts

Former Croatian international (55 selections), Tudor asserted himself as a rough defender during his visit to Juventus between 1999 and 2007. It was in the Turin club that he knew the Champions League as a player , then as a coach … Assistant. While OM will compete in the Champions League group phase next season, the lack of experience of Tudor as number 1 in this competition could serve the club.

The Croatian, however, has the advantage of being comfortable for him with the contexts similar to that of OM, where the pressure of the position is daily. Tudor was indeed coach in Croatia of the Hajduk Split (2013-2015), in Greece of the PAOK Salonica (2015-2016) and in Turkey of Galatasaray (2017), clubs where the public is able to ignite a whole Stage.

His profile, which seems to have pleased Longoria, a connoisseur of Italian football, sticks to OM. It remains to be seen whether the results will follow. But by adjusting the question of his coach in the space of three days, while Sampaoli’s surprise departure could have destabilized the whole club at the time of resumption of training, OM took off a thorn of the foot. Tudor will now be able to get to work with his workforce throughout the preparation, before the start of the Ligue 1 season on the weekend of August 6-7, when Marseille receives Reims.
