Honduras: six gang members who died in an “incident” in prison

The bodies of six men were found on the ground, only bearing underwear, in a building where members of the Gang Barrio 18 are locked up. In January 2022 four other members had perished in a prison in the country.

Six Gang members died on Monday July 4 in a high-security prison in northwestern Honduras during an “incident”, authorities announced. “An incident occurred in the penitentiary center of Ilama (El Pozo), Santa Barbara, where the death of six prisoners was reported,” the Ministry of Security said in a statement, adding that the circumstances were in being examined.

Pedro Joaquin Amador, in charge of prisons within the government, told Agency France-Presse that deceased all belonged to the Gang Barrio 18. The director of Prison Maron Largo explained to local media that the Body had been found on the ground, only carrying underwear, in a building where members of this gang are locked up.

In recent days, “there had been no situation that could alarm us. The surprise was total,” he said. This establishment hosts some 1,600 prisoners, of which nearly 600 belong to the Gang Barrio 18.

Four of its members died and eleven were injured on January 27 during clashes with other detainees in the prison of El Porvenir, on the Caribbean coast of Honduras. Some 22,000 people are locked up in around thirty prisons, some qualified as real crime academies by the very authorities of this Central America.
