A steel giant over 12 meters high dominates the Warzone, one of the six scenes of the Hellfest, the very popular metal festival which took place from June 17 to 26 in Clisson (Loire-Atlantique ). This is the new statue tribute to Ian “Lemmy” Kilmise, the singer and bass player of the British group Motörhead, died in 2015. The old man, carved as a resin and who threatened to collapse, was replaced by this imposing Structure produced by artist Caroline Brisset.
Under these five tonnes of steel, part of the ashes of the late rocker were deposited there in an urn, inaugurated during a ceremony, Thursday 23, in the presence of the last two members of the group, Phil Campbell and Mikkey Dee. All festival -goers flock around this place of meditation and selfies. Because, in the eyes of the Metal community, the author of the Hymn Ace of Spades embodies the ultimate rock figure, devoted to the cause until his last breath. Six months before being swept away by cancer, the hard -baked was still playing on the “mainstream” of the Hellfest.
The metal public, renowned, replied, once again, present for this double historical edition of the Hellfest, following two white years. The figures are already known, each edition since 2014 being played at the counter for months in advance: 420,000 tickets sold in total for 2022, or 60,000 spectators on average each day. From June 17 to 19 and from June 23 to 26, nearly 350 groups paraded on the scenes of the largest musical demonstration in France this year, among which, during the first weekend, scorching, Judas Priest, Deftones, Megadeth or gojira, and for this second, wet, Alice Cooper, Scorpions, Guns N’Roses and Metallica.
Decibels fire
Friday, downwater transformed the site into a giant mud ice rink. The next day, the clouds disappear definitively with the arrival of Airbourne. “Motörhead is indeed alive,” howl the Australian agities at the microphone, which raise a glass of whiskey-coca (Lemmy’s favorite drink) in honor of their hero, concocted live on stage. Musically, the gang of the O’Keeffe siblings perfectly masters the recipe for the Hard Rock Boogie of their AC/DC compatriots (another family affair). Spectators who did not have the chance to see on stage the golden period of the Young brothers, with the late Bon Scott (died in 1980), can thank Airbourne for passing the torch.
