The assessment of the earthquake that struck Southeast Afghanistan on Tuesday, June 21, quickly reached the thousand dead, and it could still get worse in the days to come. The provinces of Khost and Paktika, very mountainous and remote, are difficult to access. The emergency services are struggling to help victims.
According to Sam Death, head of communication from Unicef Afghanistan, at least a thousand eight hundred dwellings were destroyed by the 5.9 magnitude earthquake in the province of Gayan alone. Local authorities have deployed helicopters to transport the wounded to hospitals, while the UN and UNICEF try, by truck, to deliver primary goods to the victims.
