Merger of projects Thunderbird and K-9 Mail

The developers of Thunderbird and K-9 Mail announced about mergers projects. Postal client k-9 mail will be renamed “Thunderbird for Android” and will begin to be supplied under a new brand. The Thunderbird project has long considered the possibility of creating a version for mobile devices, but during the discussion it came to the conclusion that it makes no sense to spray strength and perform double work when you can combine efforts with an existing close open project. For K-9 Mail, joining Thunderbird is beneficial from the point of view of additional resources, expanding the user base and acceleration of development pace.

The decision on the unification was facilitated by similar goals and the presentation of both projects about what the modern mobile application for working with e -mail should be. Both projects are also scrupulous to ensure confidentiality, adhere to open standards and develop using an open development process.

Before the first release under the new name, they plan to bring the appearance and functionality of the K-9 Mail to the design and capabilities of the desktop version of Thunderbird. From the plans to expand the functionality k-9 mail , the implementation of the system of auto-installation of accounting records as in Thunderbird, improved mail folders, integration of messages support and implementation of messages and implementation synchronization between mobile and desktop versions of Thunderbird.

Christian Ketterer, the leader and main developer of the K-9 Mail project, is now employed by Mzla Technologies Corporation, which oversees the development of Thunderbird, and will continue to work on the K-9 Mail code. For existing K-9 Mail users, in addition to changing the name and the appearance of additional functionality, nothing will change. For users
Thunderbird will be able to use a mobile client, synchronized and close in functionality to a stationary version. As for the version of Thunderbird for desktop systems, it will continue to develop unchanged and using previous technologies.
