Football: in Belgium, after fairy tale time is for settlement of accounts at Union Saint-Gilloise

It looked like a fairy tale, a very rare thing in the world of current football, it should end in court. Until the end, or almost, the supporters of the Union Saint -Gilloise club (USG) will have believed in the triumph in the Belgian championship of their team, promoted last year in Division 1A – the equivalent of Ligue 1 in France -, and in the lucky star of his Belgian -Italian coach, Felice Mazzu.

A failed penalty and a questionable offside against the rival and outgoing champion, FC Bruges, during two decisive games, in May, decided otherwise. And Felice Mazzu is now the subject of a club complaint for having broken his contract and announced that he joined the Brussels Rival of the USG, the Royal Sporting of Anderlecht.

On May 20, Bruges became champion of Belgium for the seventeenth time in his history, narrowly removing the title after a competition that the USG had, until then, led from Bout, dreaming of reconnecting with the greatness of a crowned team eleven times, but never since … 1935. The victory of the Flemish club has appeared to a lot as a little unfair, only due to the Playoff system, a final round between the best four Competition teams, which starts with a division by two of the points acquired until then.

On May 8, the Union Saint-Gilloise had lost 0-2 on its field against Bruges, one of its best attackers, Dante Vanzeir (recently promoted to the national team, the Red Devils) missing A penalty at a decisive moment in the match. Three days later, in Bruges, the Brussels residents deployed their usual, fast and attractive game, but did not manage to dominate their opponent, who won 1-0.

a choice that seems risky

Consolation for the USG: a double victory during the final round on Anderlecht and a second place in the final classification, which offers him access to the qualifying tour for the Champions League. A completely unexpected performance for a club whose stadium has no more than nine thousand places.

This beautiful story has forgotten the setbacks of a competition that made the “one” of the media for other reasons: the dramatic financial situation of many clubs, corruption scandals or repeated manifestations of racism.

She was however spoiled by the announcement of the departure of Felice Mazzu, on May 30: the ex-coach of Charleroi and Genk was asked by Anderlecht to replace Vincent Kompany. The former star defender of Manchester City had to leave the management of the most titled team in Belgium (34 champion titles) for insufficient results: Anderlecht finished third in the championship and was beaten by Ghent in the Cup final.
