and two for Fabio Quartararo! The French pilot of the Yamaha stable won his second Grand Prix of the season, Sunday June 5, in Catalonia. This victory allows the defending world champion to consolidate his place as a leader in the MotoGP World Championship, a queen category of the discipline.
The Ducati Pramac of Spanish Jorge Martin and the second French of the grid, Johann Zarco, accompany him on the podium. The latter took advantage of a major error by Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia): the Spaniard believed the race ended in a turn of the end, while he occupied third place.
“I first thought that he had a mechanical problem, but then I understood that he was saluting the public,” said Johann Zarco on arrival.
Johann Zarco in the general classification
In front of French supporters who came in large numbers this weekend in Spain, Fabio Quartararo, who went third position on the grid in the Catalan furnace, signed an excellent start and took the head of the race from the first wheels. He then gradually dug the gap to win more than six seconds in advance.
The 23-year-old Nice now has 147 points in the championship, against 125 points for his pursuer, Aleix Espargaro, who finally finished fifth in the race.
Among the other headliners, the Italians Enea Bastianini (Ducati-Gresini) and Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati), third and fourth in the championship before the round of Sunday, had to abandon after falling. If Enea Bastianini keeps her rank, this abandonment is a hard blow for Francesco Bagnaia, relegated to fifth place, ten points behind Johann Zarco, past fourth.
The next round, the German Grand Prix, is scheduled for June 19.
