The announcement was eagerly awaited to resolve a serious supply crisis that has been going on for several months. The American company Abbott announced, Saturday June 4, that it restarted a large factory located in Michigan, whose prolonged closure is at the origin of a shortage of infant milk affecting all the United States.

The world’s leading power already experienced supply problems linked to the COVVI-19 pandemic when Abbott announced, in February, a recall of products suspected of having caused the death of two infants, as well as the closure of its factory.

serious health problems

The manufacturer specifies that the factory, after having fulfilled the conditions laid down by the Federal Agency for Food and Drugs (FDA), will begin to sell one of its products, the Elecare hypoallergenic milk, from the About June 20. The Abbott company, which controls 40 % of the baby milks market in the United States, assured that it “worked hard” to also relaunch the production of another very popular brand of American families, Similac, as well as the rest of its range.

“We understand the urgent need of infant milk and our absolute priority is to send safe and high quality milk to families in all the United States,” reads the press release published by the company.

The FDA had described serious health problems in the factory concerned. “Frankly, the results of the [site] inspection were shocking,” said Robert Califf, at the head of the agency, during his hearing at the Congress on May 25. The group has confused in this same hearing.

To cope with the shortage, the Biden administration, accused of having reacted too late, set up an air bridge to bring in military planes of tons of baby milk made abroad.
