Gérald Darmanin and Amélie Oudéa-Castera were invited to make “all the transparency” on the fiasco of the Stade de France. Since May 28, the chaos scenes observed near the Dyonisian enclosure on the sidelines of the Champions League final between Liverpool and Real Madrid have sparked a political storm and the anger of the British. Heard Wednesday 1 er June by the Senate Law Commission, interior and sports ministers have worked to answer point by point to questions from parliamentarians.

They had been strongly encouraged to do so at the end of the Council of Ministers, the same morning, by Emmanuel Macron. The head of state, who did everything to not be involved in this controversy, considered by those around him as a poisoned file, on which “there are only blows to take”, had not said a Word since Saturday on the Stade de France. Wednesday morning, when the controversy does not release, the president finally asked the government “the transparency, the light on the facts, the tracks so that it does not happen again, and the responsiveness”, indicated the spokesperson of the government, Olivia Grégoire.

An expectation that would even be “an obsession” for Mr. Macron, insisted the spokesperson. Before estimating that “we could surely have done better”, saying to ourselves “sorry” for the supporters, victims of these incidents. A form of mea culpa, which contrasts with the offensive tone of the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, for four days.

and the conviction that the executive had to recognize the dysfunctions, without taking refuge in denial. “When it was shitted, it must be said that it shit,” said a relative of the head of state. According to the Elysée, “the president immediately understood that it was important and he gave the orders so that it is taken seriously. And that the responsibilities are established, so that this does not happen again.” A one way of putting pressure on his Minister of the Interior, forcing him to change his attitude.

“An injury for our national pride”

The message was obviously heard by Mr. Darmanin. “It is obvious that things could have been better organized,” he said on Wednesday, during his hearing by the Senate Law Commission. “It is obvious that this sport festival was spoiled. (…) It is an injury to our national pride,” he added. “And we sincerely regret the sometimes unacceptable overflows that have taken place,” said the Minister, under fire of opposition criticism, which requires his resignation.
