Hurricane Agatha: Ten dead and twenty missing in southern Mexico

The heavy rains “brought the rivers out of their bed and caused landslides,” said Oaxaca State Governor. The peaceful coast of Mexico has not experienced such a hurricane for a month of May since 1949.

Ten people died and twenty are missing after the arrival on Monday on the coasts of the State of Oaxaca (south of Mexico) of Hurricane Agatha, demograd Tuesday, May 31, in storm tropical, the local government announced.

The phenomenon, the first hurricane of the season on the paficic coast of Mexico, touched earth as a category 2 oil on the scale of Saffir-Simpson (which has 5) Monday afternoon, at the ‘West of Puerto Angel, a coastal town of around 2,500 inhabitants in the state of Oaxaca.

He was “the most violent hurricane” never recorded on the Pacific Coast of Mexico in May since 1949, had assured, on Monday, the National Hurricane Center of the United States (NHC). Agatha moved on Tuesday, south of the state of Veracruz (east), which borders the Gulf of Mexico, causing torrential rains in this region and the south of the country.

Some 5,240 tourists were identified in the risk area, between the seaside resorts of Puerto Escondido or Huatulco, according to local authorities.

Mexico is struck each year by tropical cyclones on its peaceful and Atlantic coast, generally between May and November.
