“There is nothing more”: Maroupol, those who stay cry their destroyed city

Video Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, Maroupol, in the south of the country, undergoes the repeated assaults of the Russian army. For those who survive or who have not left the city, despair grows against destruction.

“I do not want to leave Maroupol, but we can not live anywhere here,” Valentina bitterly, wiping his tears. His apartment, like so many others in this city all southern Ukraine, has been ravaged by the Russian strikes. The emotion gains it when it sees the extent of the damage inflicted on its city.

Rare are the inhabitants of Maroupol who venture into the streets, covered with rubble. The Ukrainian Presidency broadcast an alarming assessment: at least 5,000 people have died since the beginning of the war. With difficulty and not without risks, many civilians have fled the strikes and street fighting. “I saw corpses hanging around in the city,” remembers Sergei, who took refuge with his family in Zaporijia, a few hundred kilometers.

For others, staying with the moral obligation. “We have to rebuild” the city, explains Alexander, who stands up against his building, partially destroyed. “Who will do it, otherwise we?”, Does he wonder, tears in his eyes.
