Greece: a twenty-four hour strike against inflation, which broke records

The Greek government has granted social assistance with a total amount of 4 billion euros to cope with rampant inflation. But the unions and the left opposition consider these measures insufficient.

Public services, maritime, railway and urban transport as well as a majority of private companies in Greece turned to idle on Monday, May 2, due to a general strike of twenty-four hours at the call of unions of the private and the public to protest against the outbreak of prices. Athenian public transport worked as a Sunday while supermarkets and stores were closed on this holiday Monday, the day after the May 1.

During the traditional parades of the International Workers Day on Sunday, around 9,000 demonstrators surveyed the streets in Athens, by demanding from the Greek government more measures to defend purchasing power in the face of the impact of inflation on households.

electricity that has almost doubled in one year

Inflation in Greece reached 9.4 % in April, according to the European Eurostat Statistics Office, a figure well above the European average, which is 7.5 %. In March, according to the same source, the only prices of electricity are no longer very far from having doubled – + 79.3 % at an annual rate -, against the backdrop of energy prices in a row of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The Greek government has granted social assistance with a total amount of 4 billion euros to cope with rampant inflation. The May 1st, the minimum wage has also been increased by 50 euros per month, and is now 713 euros gross. But the unions and the left opposition consider these measures insufficient and claim in particular that the minimum wage be increased to 825 euros gross per month.
