France broke a record for heat period in the spring with now 40 consecutive days above seasonal norms.
It has been hot, very hot, in recent weeks, in several places on French territory. Maximum temperature records for a month of May have even been broken, in the middle of mountains and in the South, announced on Saturday May 21, Météo-France, while the whole country is experiencing unusual spring heat.
“A depression centered on the Iberian peninsula brings very hot air to the southern half of the country”, explains Météo-France in a press release . “The temperature is thus climbed very quickly, and some maximum temperature records for a month of May are already widely beaten at 4 pm, especially at medium altitude, but also in the Toulouse South”, continues the public establishment.

It thus counts several provisional records recorded in the south in the afternoon, in particular on the relief: 34.4 ° C in Albi (against a previous record of 33.7 ° C Wednesday), 32.4 ° C at Mende or 31.7 ° C in Aurillac. In the Saint-Christol station, in the Vaucluse, located at 836 meters above sea level, the temperature has climbed to 29.4 ° C (previous record 28.1 ° C).
Météo-France also recorded a minimum temperature record in the morning among the stations open for more than twenty years, with 15.8 ° C in Champagnole in the Jura, at an altitude of 537 meters. “The station has been open since 1998, and the previous record has more than one degree,” it said.
France broke a heat period record in the spring with now forty consecutive days above seasonal norms. This series started on April 11 and has still not been interrupted, said a Météo-France spokesperson.
With the climatic disruption of the planet, heat periods are led to become more frequent and tend to settle earlier in the spring. The peaks are observed not only in the hottest of the day, but also at the lowest.
