ALMALINUX distribution is based on Cloudlinux in response to prematurely folding support for CentoS 8 Red Hat (the release of updates for Centos 8 was terminated at the end of 2021, and not in 2029, as users expected). The project is supervised by a separate non -profit organization Almalinux OS Foundation, which was created to develop a neutral platform with the participation of a community and using a management model similar to organizing the work of the Fedora project. Distribution is free for all categories of users. All achievements Almalinux are published under free licenses.

In addition to Almalinux, Rocky Linux is also positioned as alternatives to classic centos (is developed by the community under the leadership of the founder of Centos with the support of a specially created CTRL IQ), VZLINUX, Oracle Linux, SUSE Liberty Linux and EuroLinux. In addition, Red Hat has provided the possibility of free use of RHEL in organizations developing open software, and in the environment of individual developers, numbering up to 16 virtual or physical systems.
