The end of the mandatory port of the mask has been lived with relief in the faculty. But while the contaminations go on the rise, many make the choice to put it back or ask their students to do it.

All the teachers agree: To have been able to remove the mask in class on March 14, has been lived as a “liberation”. The symbol of a return to normal – or almost -, after two years of crisis related to COVID-19. But fifteen days after the reduction of barrier gestures, and the transition to level 1 (out of 4) of the health protocol, a worry begins to dawn: did not we fall too early?
Johanna Cornou, school director in Le Havre (Seine-Maritime), is one of those who think. “I almost as many cases positive at COVID today than in January-February,” she says. “Everyone is case contact!”
If we stick to the last weekly epidemiological bulletin transmitted by the Ministry of National Education, the number of closed classes – 3,080, according to figures of March 25 – remains stable. But positive cases, they are progressing for the third consecutive week, to concern 81,424 students and 10 201 staff. The same level there is just one year. Twelve schools are closed in seven academies, against four in three academies a week earlier. “These closures are consecutive to contaminations of teachers rather than students,” said Rue de Grenelle, recalling to give up the strategy of the “positive] case, a closure”.
“In Brittany, in the Parisian region, in the north, in Strasbourg, the absences due to COVID increase again,” says Sophie Venetiy from SNES-Fsu. “In Alsace, Normandy, Brittany, Champagne, teachers in our network are already talking about a new wave, Redeems Catherine Nave-Bekhti, Sgen-CFDT. We are reported to school situations with seven children. The same class contaminated at the same time, or, in the second degree, cases of establishments with decimated school life and 15% to 20% hours flying, for lack of substitutes.
