Who said there were no debates in this presidential campaign? There is on the contrary plethora, even if the candidates – or their representatives – do not confront himself directly, avoiding the granting fair, but submit in turn to the exercise of the “great oral” on themes sectoral – housing, health, safety, sport, social protection, firefighters, hunting … – and in front of an informed audience. Rare, however, are those who manage to gather almost all candidates such as organized, Tuesday, March 15 at the Belfry of Montrouge (Hauts-de-Seine), by the three associations of elected representatives – Association of Mayors of France (AMF ), Assembly of the departments of France (ADF) and regions of France – grouped in United States, which also benefited from a live television broadcast on parliamentary channels.

Ten candidates, on the twelve validated by the Constitutional Council, had answered the invitation, all benefiting from an equal time of speech and, after having exposed their vision of “local freedoms”, to answer the questions of three elected – communal, departmental and regional. Only were missing at the Eric Zemmour call, which had been pale at the last moment, and Emmanuel Macron, traveling to Maine-et-Loire where he met Ukrainian refugees. A bitter absence regretted by the first Vice-President of the AMF, André Laignel, denouncing “a very republican behavior”.

If all participants benefited from the same Republican reception – what did not fail to emphasize the “small” candidates who had not been invited, the day before, on the TF1 plateau – all, On the other hand, have not crossed the obstacle with the same agility. First right in the running, the Communist candidate, Fabien Roussel, intends to “give back all their place and their role to municipalities”, thus marking his low appetite for intercommunalities. He wants to “put an end to competition between the territories” and advocates “a multiannual plan for resettleing public services”. A theme that will return to other interventions such as those of Nathalie Arthaud (Workers’ Struggle) or Philippe Poutou (new anticapitalist party): “When public services are recovering, it is the advanced traffic,” he says.

“New decentralization act”

It is also called “for the return to regions on humane size”. Several stakeholders will plead in the same direction, or even evoke pure and simple removal of the regional level. The candidate of the national rally, Marine Le Pen, wishes to “evolve the couple Region Department”, stroking the idea of entrusting the management of the department to regional councilors elected on the departmental section. “We do not need regions”, estimates for its part Nicolas Dupont-Aignan (standing France), who wants to “redeploy regional agents where they are useful”. While Jean-Luc Mélenchon (France unsuitable) judges the legitimacy of the “more than Incertaine” regions: “The Republic, it is the municipality plus the department,” he tonnes.
