Burkina Faso: Thirteen gendarmes killed, several “missing” worn in north of country

Jihadist attacks have made more than 2,000 deaths and compels more than 1.7 million people to flee their home since 2015.

At least thirteen gendarmes were killed Sunday, March 13 in an ambush near Taparko, a mining locality located in northern Burkina Faso prey to frequent and murderer jihadist attacks, he learned from safe sources.

The security elements were leaving for a recognition and securing mission on the Taparko-Tougouri axis where, earlier in the morning, two people were killed by the explosion of a craft machine at the passage of a car transport, explained this source. Several others were injured, including “two seriously affected”, and evacuated at the Tougouri Medical Center.

Friday, an explosive machine had been triggered on the same axis of the national road number 3, at the passage of a truck. This incident had made two injuries and material damage.

Craft gold mines attacked

Burkina Faso, especially the northern and east regions, faces jihadist attacks that have made more than 2,000 deaths and forces more than 1.7 million people to flee their home since 2015.

Attacks with improvised explosive gear (FDI) that have multiplied since 2018 claimed life at nearly 300 people – civilian and military -, according to a statement of AFP. These attacks are often coupled with ambushes.

At least eleven civilians were killed on Saturday in the attack of a homemade gold mine in the north of the country, on the axis between Dori, capital of the Sahel region, and Gorom- Gorom.

This attack occurred two days after another similar which targeted a wild gold mine of Tondobi, a locality of the town of Seyngth, near the Nigerian border, making a dozen deaths.

Since the end of January, a military junta led by Lieutenant-Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba is in power after a military coup that overthrew President Roch Marc Christian Kaboré, who failed to stem the Jihadist violence. The new president, Lieutenant-Colonel Damiba, made the fight against jihadism and the reboundation of the Burkinabe state his “priority”.
