War in Ukraine: Deaf dialogue between Washington and Beijing

Jake Sullivan, President Biden Security Advisor, and Yang Jiechi, Director of the Central Foreign Affairs Commission of the Chinese Communist Party, met in Rome on Monday for nearly seven o’clock. The statements of each of the parties act on the Ukrainian and Taiwanese records.

The meeting of nearly seven hours held, Monday, March 14 in Rome, the American Jake Sullivan, a security advisor to the US President Joe Biden, and Yang Jiechi, member of the Political Office and Director of the Commission Foreign Central Chinese Communist Party (CPC), made it possible to make the difference between the United States and China, but not to bring their points closer together.

The press release published by the White House at the end of the meeting holds in eight lines. It is learned that the two men have had “a substantial discussion on the Russian war against Ukraine” and that they have “emphasized the importance of keeping open communication lines” between Beijing and Washington.

On the other hand, China has been much more prolix. The official Xinhua agency (China New) released two dispatches. The first is a tour overview of the bilateral relationship and devotes no less than three paragraphs to Taiwan: Beijing expresses its “serious concern” and its “Firm Opposition” in the face of US support for the island’s “separatist forces”. A minute later, a shorter dispatch reports the words of Yang Jiechi on Ukraine. In addition to the reminder of the traditional position of China on respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, Yang added that “it is important to take into consideration the historical context of the Ukrainian question, to rise at the origin of the problem and take into consideration the legitimate concerns of all parties “.

The order of priorities is not the same

Only two lines, at the end of the dispatch, relate to the debates of the day: the affirmation by the United States that Beijing would help militarily militate Russia. “The Chinese part is resolutely opposed to all statements and actions that spread false information or denature and discredit China’s position.”

According to the Financial Times, “the United States told their allies that China had responded positively to the request of Russia for military equipment. Cables sent to allies in Europe and Asia do not say if the China provided help or simply told Moscow that it would provide help. ” According to this source, “Russia would have asked for five types of equipment to China: soil-air missiles, drones, armored vehicles, logistical vehicles and intelligence equipment.”.

After the meeting of Rome, Ned Price, spokesman for the US State Department, said: “We have clearly told China that we would not stay there. We will not allow any country. It should be offsetting the losses of Russia due to economic sanctions. “According to him,” China could do more than many other countries to put an end to this insane violence, to this brutality, to this premeditated War of Putin ” .
