Until then, their diffusion did not exceed the success of esteem, but the brutal and spectacular inflation of the pump price makes it an option that many motorists begin to consider. Benefiting from preferential tax treatment, the liter of LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) as Superethanol (E85) displays a rate of less than half or diesel. In addition to that they can also operate with conventional gasoline, vehicles adapted to these fuels do not impose strong constraints and require only moderate investment.

In 2018, according to AAA data cabinet data, alternative fuels accounted for only 3,000 sales. Since then, however, they have expanded: 52 200 vehicles in 2021 (including 46,400 running at LPG) and already more than 10,000 for the month of January 2022, or 5% of total sales. The facilities must be added (about 30,000 in 2021) of conversion boxes to the Superathanol on standard models. A vein on which very few builders have bet.

Very popular in Italy and the Netherlands, the LPG is a derivative of the treatment of natural gas and oil refining. It returns to honor after experiencing an ephemeral success there are a dozen years thanks to the assignment of a bonus. This fuel, which transmits 20% carbon dioxide (co 2 ) less than gasoline and no particle, is around 0.90 euro per liter against nearly 2 euros for the essence and diesel. Since the beginning of 2022, the volumes consumed are up 65%.

The oil gas, which is not dependent on Russian gas imports (30% of production is in France, the rest comes from Algeria and Norway), is the preserve of Renault and Its subsidiary Dacia, specialist in cheap models. In Europe, this brand achieves 30% of its sales thanks to the GPL, with models charged with a supplement of 500 euros.

Although because of its slightest energy density, it consumes a little more, a GPL model makes the difference thanks to the slightest price at the pump (40 euros full for traveling 500 kilometers). The distribution network has 1,500 points of sale, but in the Paris region it is difficult to find a pump. “Customers who opt for the GPL are those who have to make their accounts. They are more financially constrained, drive a lot and reside in peri-urban or rural areas”, details Xavier Martinet, director of Dacia marketing. “For me who travels 80 kilometers a day, the GPL is 60 euros of economy a month. In addition, the vignette criterion 1 makes it possible to enter Paris even the days of pollution alert”, argues A large father lives in Normandy.
