NVIDIA released LIBVDPAU 1.5 library with AV1 support

developers from NVIDIA presented open library Libvdpau 1.5 With the implementation of support for API VDPAU (Video Decode and Presentation) for UNIX-like systems. The VDPAU library makes it possible to use hardware acceleration mechanisms for video processing in H264, H265, VC1, VP9 and AV1 formats, and take part of the GPU tasks such as post-processing, merging (compositing), display and decoding video. Initially, the library was supported only by the GPU from NVIDIA, but subsequently appeared support for open drivers for AMD cards. Code libvdpau spreads under license MIT.

In addition to correcting errors in LIBVDPAU 1.5 implemented support for accelerating video decoding in AV1 format, as well as added tools for tracing for VP9 and HEVC formats. Video codek Av1 Designed by the Alliance Open Media (Aomedia), which presents companies such as Mozilla, Google, Microsoft, Intel, Arm, Nvidia, IBM, Cisco, Amazon, Netflix, AMD, Videolan, Apple, CCN and Realtek. AV1 is positioned as a publicly available and does not require payment of deductions free video coding format, which is noticeably ahead of H.264 and VP9 in terms of compression.
