Published Desktop release Budgie 10.6 , which became the first release after solving the project, regardless of the solus distribution. The project is now supervised by the independent organization Buddies of Budgie. Budgie 10.6 continues to be based on GNOME technologies and your own GNOME Shell shell implementation, but for Budgie 11 branches, the transition to a set of libraries EFL ( ENLIGHTENEMENT FOUNDATION LIBRARY) developed by the ENLIGHTENENT project. Project code extends under the GPLV2 license. To get acquainted with Budgie, you can use such distributions as Ubuntu Budgie , Solus , geckolinux and Endeavouros .
To control windows in Budgie, the Budgie Window Manager (BWM) window manager is used, which is an extended modification of the MUTER base plug-in. The Budgie base is a panel close to the organization of work to the classic desktop paneling. All elements of the panel are applets, which allows you to flexibly set up the composition, change placement and replace the implementation of the main elements of the panel to your taste. Among the available applets, you can mark the classic application menu, task switching system, an area of open window list, viewing virtual desktops, power management indicator, volume control applet, system status indicator and clock.
Main innovations:
- Reviewed Project Positioning – Instead of the final product, Budgie is now presented as a platform based on which distributions and users can create solutions adapted for their own preferences. For example, it is possible to select the design, set of applications and the style of the desktop.
- In the Organizing Plan, work has been done to eliminate the separation between the organization directly engaged in developing, and downstream projects, such as Ubuntu Budgie, which create final products based on Budgie. Such downstream projects are provided with more opportunities to participate in the development of Budgie.
- to simplify the creation of own solutions based on the Budgie code base is divided into several components that are now supplied separately:
- Budgie Desktop – directly Custom Shell.
- Budgie Desktop View – Set of pictograms for desktop.
- Budgie Control Center – Configurator, branched from GNOME Control Center.
