In an interview at the “World”, the boss of the Ukrainian nuclear power enterprise Energoatom states that the Russians have “bombarded the whole area of the plant” and that the direction of the site works today under their armed threat.
The Russian army took control, Friday, March 4, from the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, Zaporijia, making fear for the security of the site. A fire was triggered in the morning at a central training center, but the Ukrainian authorities then assured that it had been turned off and the plant was working normally. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has its assured part that the security of the plant was not threatened. The concern, however, remains on the operating mode of the site with Ukrainian personnel under Russian control.
Petro Kotin is the president of the Ukrainian nuclear power enterprise Energoatom, which operates the nuclear power plants of the country. In an interview greeted in the world Friday, March 4th, he claims that the Russians have “bombarded the whole area of the plant” and that the direction of the site works today under their armed threat. Currently, a team of 800 people works in the plant, which has 11,000 employees in all.
What happened exactly in the plant in the night of Thursday 3 to Friday, March 4th?
The Russians bombed the entire area of the plant, the administrative building itself, the entrance to the site, in the security zone, and the building dedicated to the training, located near the administrative building. They started bombing at 1:42 and ended in the early morning after breaking the secure entrance and entered the plant. Then they took control. There are no more bombardments since.
It was bombing or only shots?
Both. There were bombing. They also shot from their tanks and infantry vehicles. According to our first information, there are three dead and two wounded, one of which is between life and death. The three deaths are employees of the plant, but we do not know for the time if they are security agents or staff of the plant – it’s being verified.
What are the damage ?
The number 1 reactor was touched by a bombardment but seems intact, according to our first information, because the protective walls of the six reactors are very thick. A special pipe that connects the reactors to treatment buildings, where radioactive water is purified and returned to the reactors, was also damaged by these bombings. There is no radioactive leak, but the risk exists.
The training on training was completely destroyed by bombing. This caused a big fire. The Russians have, at first, prevented firefighters from accessing the site to turn it off.
