The Kia EV6 was elected car of the year 2022, Monday, February 28, by a jury of 59 European journalists, succeeding the Toyota Yaris. The Korean electric model has obtained 279 points, winning the Finish on the Renault Mégane E-Tech (265 points) and the Hyundai Ioniq 5 (261 points). Only model available with a thermal engine present among the seven finalists, the Peugeot 308 arrives in fourth position. Two 100% electric cars had already been crowned: the Nissan Leaf in 2011 and the Jaguar I-Pace, in 2019.
This election rewards a long sedan with baroque lines and advanced technology. The KIA EV6 has theoretical autonomy of more than 500 km and its electric architecture in 800 volts allows it to recharge its high capacity batteries (77.4 kW) very quickly (from 0% to 80% in less than 20 minutes ) on an ultra-fast terminal.
Electrification of the European market
This success, as well as the third place of IONIQ 5, also devotes the success of the two brands of the Korean group, which have increased significantly as the electrification of the European automotive market intensified. In 2021, cumulative sales of Kia (4.1% market share) and Hyundai (4.4%) exceeded one million units in Europe. This is the first time a Korean model is sacred by the jury of the car of the year.
