VOLODYMYR ZELENSKY do some sort of parade at the invasion of Ukraine by Russia? Nothing is less sure. Still, the Ukrainian president asked Monday 28 February, that his country can benefit from a “special procedure” to join the European Union (EU). The initiative gives an idea of the spirit of resistance that animates the leader, while the Russian offensive redouble intensity on the fifth day of operations triggered by Vladimir Putin.
To tell the truth, it was Ursula von der Leyen who, the day before, started this symbolic and eminently political debate. On the Euronews channel, the Chairperson of the Commission referred to his wish to “wear” Ukraine’s accession to the EU “in the near future”.
After heavy economic sanctions, the twenty-seven had to make their decision to assist Ukraine militarily, to close their airspace to Russian planes and to prohibit the media RT and Sputnik, considered as propaganda instruments at the service of the Kremlin.
“We are in a process of integrating Ukraine into the single market. There are many topics that we work very closely together and a sense of belonging is developing over time. They are ours. , and we want them with us, “said M me von der Leyen. As of Monday, Volodyymyr Zelensky has reacted by claiming an integration “without delay, via a special procedure”. Kiev should post forward a formal request for integration. “I’m sure it’s right. I’m sure it’s possible,” launched the Ukrainian head of state.
Ursula von der Leyen: “They are ours”
In reality, there is no accelerated procedure for EU membership. Such a candidacy implies a long process that starts with an acceptance of the request by the Commission, the European Parliament, the Council (the Member States) and an official validation by the European Council (the Heads of State and Government) to the unanimity. Before a long journey and negotiation aimed at the country concerned integrates “the acquis communautaire” and satisfies the criteria of thirty-five different chapters dealing with the entire spectrum of the EU activity and formulate a series of Requirements (democracy, rule of law, independence of justice, respect for minorities, etc.).
By launching his “they are ours”, M me von der Leyen made a symbolically mark the attachment of Europeans to this country at war. “It clearly refers to the fact that Ukraine has a European perspective”, judging that this state “is one of ours in the sense that it is a European country,” said a spokesperson.
