Transparency operation. While Emmanuel Macron multiplies diplomatic appointments to try to get a ceasefire in Ukraine, his Prime Minister, Jean Castex, received the candidates declared in the presidential election, Monday, February 28, in Matignon, For an “information meeting” around the conflict and sanctions imposed on Russia. For nearly two hours, the tenant of Matignon made “a point on the military and diplomatic situation”, according to his entourage, in the presence of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jean-Yves Le Drian, the Minister of the Armies, Florence Parly, From the government spokesman, Gabriel Attal, as well as the chief of staff of the armies, General Thierry Burkhard.

The opportunity for the executive to display his concern to play collective. In the introduction, Mr. Castex stressed want to “share all the useful information, in a spirit of responsibility and transparency”, and not “to have a political debate”. “The importance of the crisis that strikes the European continent requires regular information from Parliament and political forces,” he insisted, promising to “continue” to bring together the opposition “as many times as the situation l “will impose”, as has been the case “as part of the health crisis”. A parliamentary liaison committee has already been held on Friday, before the organization of a debate in the National Assembly and the Senate, without vote, provided for Tuesday 1 March.

Far from the controversy they employ for several months, during their meetings or in the media, most candidates welcomed the initiative of the Prime Minister, at the exit of the meeting, welcoming a “Useful” and “important” discussion. In turn, Gabriel Attal described an exchange in a “spirit of responsibility”, evoking the will of the President of the Republic that this crisis is managed “in the most democratic way” possible.

Fouffer Any internal criticism

No question of cautioned on this sensitive ground. According to Mr. Macron’s entourage, this wish to associate the opposition responds to the will of the head of state not to provide his competitors an opportunity to criticize him on a supposed solitary management of the Ukrainian crisis. Whoever has to announce his own candidacy for his re-election before the deadline of 4 March hopes to push his competitors to tighten the ranks around him, in a form of national unity. And thus stifle any internal criticism on his action. “In this period of extreme instability, the French are waiting for unity. We must show that we do everything for”, summarizes a macronist of the first circle.
